In May 1959, a more powerful and updated version of the MG A was introduced. Known as the MG A 1600, this new variant was fitted with a larger 1588cc inline four engine that generated 80hp. As well as the new engine, other updates for the A 1600 included front disc brakes, separate stop/tail lights and turn signals, and a 1600 badge on the boot. A few 1600 De Luxe versions were offered that came with all-round disc brakes and used the chassis from the MG A Twin-Cam. These De Luxe variants were actually made with the “leftovers” from previous models. The MGA 1600 came to an end when the MGA MKII was introduced in 1960.
