The Mk.3 Midget saw yet another increase in displacement and power, bumping up to 1275cc with a 65-horsepower development of the A-series engine found elsewhere in the Mini Cooper S. US-market models started seeing safety features including a collapsible steering column and a padded dashboard for the 1968 model year. In 1972, the wheel arches over the rear wheels were rounded, compared to the squared-off apertures found on earlier cars. These round-arch cars are especially desirable to enthusiasts.
