In 2009 Nissan released a follow-up to the high-performance Nissan Skyline GT-R. The new car was called the GT-R and is not directly part of the Skyline model. This halo car is constructed from steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber and carries its twin-turbo 3.8L V6 motor behind its front axle, which Nissan calls a "front mid-ship" location. The powerplant produced 473hp when production began, and over time reached 557hp to all wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The GT-R's nearly 4000 lb weight is distributed almost evenly. 2010, 2016, and 2023 would see external updates to the car's styling. Over the years, a track-focused Nismo and Nismo Special Edition as well as other special editions such as the Black Edition, Premium, Track Edition, and the T-Spec were released. The GT-R is also a formidable race car and has a broad competition history with the track model the GT1. Three generations of the GT-R have been built: CBA-R35 (2007-2011), DBA-R35 (2012-2016), and 4BA-R35 (2017-2025).
