The first iteration of Porsche Cayman variants is known as the 987.1. They were introduced for model year 2006, sharing the same mid-engine platform and many components from the second generation Porsche Boxster. The first variant of the fastback coupé to be released was the Cayman S, powered by a 3.4 liter flat-6 boxer engine, followed by the Cayman base model, powered by a 2.7 liter flat-6. Both the base model and S variants were available with either manual or an automatic (Tiptronic) transmission option. A notable variant of the 987.1 is the Porsche Cayman Design Edition 1. The 987.1 generation evolved for model year 2009 for the Cayman 987.2.
