The Renault 4, also known as the R4, is one of the world's most recognizable and successful cars. Renault created the 4 in order to compete with the Citroën 2CV, which had become a very popular economy model. The 4 was Renault's first front wheel drive model, and over the years, was fitted with a range of compact inline four engines. Renault offered the 4 in three body styles: the popular five door estate, as well as a two door van or pickup truck. Over the years, Renault tweaked and improve the model, but largely, the car remained unchanged, with over 8 million examples sold before the end of production in 1994.
