For model year 1989 Toyota introduced the fifth generation of the Toyota Pickup (or 5th Gen Toyota Hilux in markets outside the USA). In 1991, North American production began in Fremont, California (the VIN on these trucks starts with '4T'), however some trucks sold in the United States during the 1991–1995 model years were still manufactured in Japan (VIN starts with 'JT'). Model variants include the Regular Cab and Xtracab and it was available in both manual and automatic, with a range of engines for the US market including the carbureted 2.4 I4 (22R), the fuel injected 2.4L I4 (22R-E), and the 3.0L V6 (3VZ-E). For the 1996 model year, Toyota discontinued the Pickup in the United States, replacing it with the new Tacoma. For other markets, the Pickup continued in production as the Toyota Hilux.
