The first generation of Volvo C70 was introduced for the 1997 model year. The C70 was initially introduced as a coupe, but in 1998, a convertible was also offered. The first generation C70 was developed in collaboration with Tom Walkinshaw Racing, and although the partnership experienced troubles, the car benefitted from TWR's expertise in performance and handling. The first generation C70 was created to be sport facing, but was not considered a performance car, with the most potent engine being a turbocharged inline five unit. Production of the first generation C70 coupe ended in 2002, while the convertible continued until 2005, the model would be replaced by the Second Generation Volvo C70.
