A special run of racing focused Alfa Romeo Giuliettas first appeared in 1956. Bodied by famous Italian design house Zagato, these Giuliettas are known as the Sprint Zagato. Three main versions of the Sprint Zagato, or SZ were produced. Originally, Zagato rebodied a crashed Sprint Veloce for the purpose of racing, and due to this car's success, a further 18 examples were produced. These Sprint Veloce based Zagatos were known as the SVZ, and were the first Zagato Giullietas. In 1960, a production competition version of the SVZ appeared. Called the SZ, this production version was based on the Sprint Speciale and featured a defining round tail "Coda Tonda." Near the end of production, a second version was produced, this time featured a short Kamm-style tail known as the "Coda Tronca." These "Coda Tronca" cars are also referred to as the SZ2, in order to differentiate from the the "Coda Tonda" roundtails. An estimated 220 examples were produced, of those less than 40 are believed to be SZ2 "Coda Tronca" cars. Due to the nature of Zagato's work, exact numbers are hard to verify as the company often rebodied existing Giuliettas to customer specifications. The Sprint Zagato Giuliettas were in production until 1962.
