After the launch of the Third Generation Camaro in 1982, the Chevrolet Camaro was awarded Car of the Year honors from Motor Trend, which made it an easy choice as the Indianapolis 500 pace car. Delivered in silver with a red pin stripe separating a blue body stripe along the sides, most of the cars also had the Indy 500 stencil kit on the doors, and the famed Indy tire logo with wings on the B pillars. The 1982 Pace Car also came with styled rough cast aluminum wheels with red lines. The interior of the car was just as flashy with a two-tone blue that matched the exterior theme, and an Indy 500 emblem on the glove box door in front of the passenger. While the original Z28 that paced the race field utilized an aluminum 350ci V8 producing 250hp, under the simulated hood vents of the Indy Pace Cars you could find the 305ci V8 with a carburetor, or optional Cross fire fuel injection. This engine was paired to a 4 speed manual or TH350 3 speed automatic transmission, with drive being sent to the rear wheels. A notable and rare option was 4-wheel disc brakes. Two body styles were offered for the 1982 Indy Pace cars: Hardtop and T-tops. Production of the Chevrolet Camaro 1982 Z28 Pace Car was limited to 1982, with a total of 6,360 examples built.
