The Lamborghini Jalpa was another attempt by the Italian firm to establish an entry level exotic. Launched in 1981, the Jalpa was much more successful than the Lamborghini Silhouette it was based on, but sales were far lower than hoped, with an estimated 415 having been built (final production numbers vary depending on source). Powered by an enlarged version of the Urraco P300 3.0L V8 engine, the more powerful 3.5L produced 255hp. In terms of design, the targa topped Jalpa was an evolution of the Silhouette, sharing many of the styling cues from the Bertone designed car. After ending production in 1988, the Jalpa was replaced years later with the Lamborghini Gallardo.
