The Land Rover Discovery Sport was launched in 2014 as a replacement for the Freelander, the company's compact SUV line until then. They rebranded the car in a marketing effort to position the marque in the medium/compact SUV market, associating the new model designation with one of the most prestigious models in the Land Rover line-up: the Land Rover Discovery. Built on a shared platform with Jaguar E-Pace and the Range Rover Evoque, the Discovery Sport became the first SUV part of the new Discovery sub-brand, built for the family car segment, while the Range Rover was now focused on the luxury car segment.
