The first generation of Mercedes-Benz CLK, known as the W208, was introduced for the 1998 model year. The CLK was mechanically based on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and was offered in coupe and convertible body styles. This series of rear wheel drive cars was offered in six main variants: CLK200, CLK200 Kompressor, CLK230 Kompressor, CLK320, CLK430, and CLK55 AMG. Perhaps the best known W208 CLK variant is the CLK GTR. The GTR was created in order to homologate the CLK for the FIA GT Championship racing series. These limited production race-inspired cars shared almost no components with the standard road-going CLK, with notable exceptions being the front grill and headlights. Production of the first generation W208 CLK lasted until 2003, when it was replaced by the Second Generation Mercedes-Benz W209 CLK.
