The Saab 900 SPG (Special Performance Group) was a sporty variant of the Classic Generation Saab 900 that was introduced for the 1985 model year. The SPG, which is known as the Turbo 16 Aero in Europe, was only offered in a two door liftback coupe body style that included an aerodynamic body kit. Initially, these cars were equipped with a 160hp turbocharged 2.0L 16-valve engine, but later in production, it was producing up to 175hp. This engine was equipped with Saab's Automatic Performance Control (APC), which was a boost controller that also helped to reduce engine knock and greatly improve the engines usability. For the first two years of production, the SPG was largely a cosmetic offering, outside of the 16-valve Turbo engine. From 1987 onwards, the SPG was fitted with a range of improvements such as improved suspension, sway bars, and other luxury features. Notably, all equipment offered on the SPG was available through Saab's parts catalog, sometimes making identification of original SPGs difficult. The Saab 900 SPG was in production until 1991.
