The first generation of Toyota Tacoma was introduced for the 1995 model year. Although related to the Toyota Hilux, the Tacoma was originally developed to be specific to the US and Canadian markets, and as such, featured greater emphasis on ride comfort and quality as opposed to other markets. Model variants include the Regular Cab (2 doors), Xtracab (2 doors - also referred to as Extended Cab), and Double Cab (4 doors, available as of 2001). Three engine options were available: a 2.4L I4 (2RZ-FE), a 2.7L I4 (3RZ-FE), and a 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE), with rear wheel drive and four wheel drive configurations. Regardless of engine or drivetype, manual and automatic transmissions were available. A wide range of trims or packages were offered, starting with the the SR5, SX, and LX, and later the Limited, TRD Off-Road package (treated here as a trim, but offered on top of the SR5 or Limited), PreRunner (RWD), and finally the S-Runner, a performance focused trim. Production of the 1st Gen Toyota Tacoma ended in 2004, before it was replaced by the 2nd Gen Tacoma.
