The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), better known as the Humvee, was a series of lightweight military trucks and utlity vehicles. When the army opened a contract to create an updated generation of multipurpose utility vehicles, Chrysler Defense and Teledyne Continental both produced a design, but AM General won the contract with the HMMWV. These military vehicles were built in a wide array of body styles and specifications depending on their intended task, and were available with a range of V8 engines, yet all were built with a 4x4 drivetrain. The AM General Humvee has been in production for over nearly forty years, with various evolutions having been built. The Humvee would not only prove an incredibly capable vehicle, but its popularity spawned a successful commercial version, the Hummer H1.
