The name “Yenko” preceding a Chevrolet model is synonymous with high performance, and the Yenko Chevelle was no exception. Don Yenko was a Chevrolet Dealer who made a name for himself by bending the rules to get high performance engines in some of Chevrolets best models. Don Yenko operated a Chevy dealership in Cannonsburg PA, and was also an active race car driver himself. Don had his finger on the pulse of what the race car community wanted and starting in 1967 with the Camaro, Don started stuffing 427 Corvette blocks in Camaros, and V8s in Corvairs. Before too long Yenko figured out from Fred Gibb (Chevy Dealer and race car owner) the COPO program that he could have the factory install the 427/ L72 producing 450hp in the '69 Chevelle. To provide even more exclusivity to his Yenko brand, he added “SYC” embroidered headrests and special Yenko hood and side stripes. The Yenko Chevelle, joined the ranks with Yenko Camaro and Yenko Nova to be some of the top muscle cars in their day.
