The Ford Escort Twin Cam was a performance focused variant of the Mk1 Ford Escort that debuted in 1968. The coupe-only Twin Cam was created with a view to motorsports, and featured a notable engine. The 1.6L inline four was built using a Ford block, but the dual overhead camshaft cylinder head was built by Lotus, and was originally intended for use in the Lotus Elan. This engine generated around 105hp that was sent to the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual gearbox. A total of 1,263 examples of the Ford Escort Twin Cam were built before production was phased out in favor of the Ford Escort RS1600.
