Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Lightweight - 1st Gen (1968 to 1968)

The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Lightweight was a limited production, drag racing variant of the 1967-1968 Ford Mustang that was built in 1968. The Cobra Jet Lightweight was built by Ford in order to be able to participate in a variety of NHRA stock classes, and was heavily based on a prototype built using existing Ford parts that was created by famed Ford dealer and racer Bob Tasca. This series of drag racers were also known as the 135 Mustangs, due to their sequential VINs that included "135." Although named "Lightweight" due to their lack of sound insulaton and seam sealer, only 20 examples were actually built without insulation and sealer, the other 30 were built normally. These cars were powered by a modified version Ford's 428 Cobra Jet V8 engine, which was conservatively rated at 335hp and 440 lb ft of torque, and was paired to a 4 speed manual transmission.
