Ford Mustang GT - 1st Gen (1967 to 1968)

The Mustang GT was a performance focused offering for the 1967-1968 First Generation Ford Mustang. Mustangs equipped with the GT Equipment Group package were offered in Hardtop, Convertible, and Fastback body styles, and offered a range of visual and mechanical changes over the Base 1967-1967 Ford Mustang. Visually, GT-equipped cars featured grill-mounted fog lights, GT stripes down the lower sides of the body, a 'GT' pop-open gas cap, and chrome exhaust tips that exited through the rear bumper. Mechanically, GT cars received stiffer springs, uprated shocks, wider tires, a thicker front sway bar, and front disc brakes. Although the 1967-1968 Mustang GT was only offered with a V8 engine, the engine options varied from 1967 to 1968. For 1967, GT engines were the "C-code" (200hp two-barrel 289), the "A-code" (225hp four-barrel 289), the "K-code" (271hp four-barrel 'HiPo' 289), and the "S-code" (325hp four-barrel 390). For 1968, GT engine options were scaled down, with the two main options being the "J-code" (230hp four-barrel 302), and the "S-code" (325hp four-barrel 390). For the late 1968 model year, Ford made a run of GT-equipped Mustangs that were fitted with the mighty 335hp Cobra Jet "R-code" 428 cubic inch V8, these highly sought-after cars are named after their engine, and are known as the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet. All GT engines were all available with a 4 speed manual or 3 speed automatic transmission, both of which sent drive to the rear wheels. Exclusive to the 1967 model year, manual-equipped GTs were badged as 'GT,' while automatic equipped GTs were badged as 'GTA.' A total of 41,545 examples of the 1967-1968 Ford Mustang GT were built (including Cobra Jets) before being replaced by the 1969 Ford Mustang GT.
