The 1969-1970 First Generation Ford Mustang Base Model was introduced for 1969, and was offered as a Hardtop coupe, as well as in Convertible and Fastback (SportsRoof) body styles. The standard Mustang hardtop had a wide range of engine options including inline six and V8 powerplants. The inline six options were the base 120hp "T-code" 200 cubic inch (3.3L) inline six, and the 155hp "L-code" 250 cubic inch (4.1L) inline six. V8 engine options consisted of the 210hp "F-code" 302 cubic inch (4.9L) V8, the 250hp "H-code" 351 cubic inch (5.8L) V8, the 290hp "M-code" 351 cubic inch (5.8L) V8, and the 'Cobra Jet' 335hp "R-code" 428 cubic inch (7.0L) V8. The "R-code" Cobra Jet engine was known as the "Q-code" when fitted with the optional functional hood scoop. Only available for 1969, the 320hp "S-code" 390 cubic inch (6.4L) V8, was also offered. Transmission options consisted of a 3 speed manual, a 4 speed manual, and a 3 speed automatic transmission, all of which sent drive to the rear wheels. The Base Model 1969-1970 Ford Mustang Hardtop was replaced when Ford introduced the 1971-1973 First Generation Ford Mustang.
