The 3rd Generation of the Ford Taurus was introduced for 1996. It had a radically rounded and oval design, especially visible in the windows, lights and grille. It was offered as a 4 door sedan and 5 door station wagon, featuring front-wheel drive. Available transmissions were 4 speed automatics. Engines included the 3.0L V6 as the base model and a more powerful 3.0L V6 in higher trim levels. This was the last generation to offer a SHO version featuring a 3.4L Yamaha V8 engine paired exclusively to a 4 speed automatic transmission. Main variants were the LX and SE models, in addition to fleet versions such as the G and the LX Wagon. The 3rd Gen Taurus was produced until 1999 and was replaced by the 4th Gen Ford Taurus.
