By 1911, the young brand Hispano-Suiza had already produced what would become one of its most popular models, the Alfonso XIII, or 45cr (race version), with a Type 15T racing inline four-cylinder engine. The car was designed by Marc Birkigt after a previous race car and produced 64hp, propelling the car to 80mph. The vehicle would rival other race cars and arguably lay claim to the title of first 'sports car.' Some Alfonso XIIIs had body variations as many cars of the era did when customers had coachbuilders construct one-off bodies. One such example is the Double Berline by Carrosserie Alin & Liautard. The Alfonso was named after Hispano-Suiza's prodigious admirer, Alfonso XIII, the King of Spain, and was only affordable to the elite. It is estimated that just 500 examples of the Hispano-Suiza Alfonso XIII were built by 1914, when production ended.
