By 1931 Hispano-Suiza was in fierce competition with the likes of Bugatti and Rolls-Royce. Designer Mark Birkigt needed an engine and chassis to replace the aging H6 with technology to rival these automotive juggernauts, and the J12 is what he came up with. These astonishing cars were a leap forward, featuring a V12 engine of 9.5L producing 220hp, four-wheel assisted brakes, and a synchromesh gearbox. After coachwork of the customer's choice, such as the Type 68 Berline Vanvooren or a custom body by Henry Binder or Kellner, these cars were formidable competition and are beloved today by collectors of the brand and some of the most valuable. About 120 examples of the Hispano-Suiza J12 were constructed until the end of production in 1938.
