After the Jaguar D-Type's absolute success in most of its racing efforts, Jaguar decided to produce the remaining 25 cars as road-going versions of the D-Type. The latter meant performance was very impressive for a roadgoing car: 0-60 mph in just 5.2 seconds, a top speed of 149 mph, and a quarter mile time of just 13.9 seconds. Priced at $6,900, it was an expensive car by then, when a new Corvette was priced at $3,465 and a Porsche Carrera could be had by $5,915. Only 16 Jaguar XKSS were produced in 1957, even though the plan was to produce 25. The remaining 9 cars were destroyed in a fire at Jaguar's Browns Lane factory in 1957, limiting the XKSS production run even more. All of those 16 cars were originally intended for North America, yet 1 stayed in England, 1 went to Hong Kong, 2 went to Canada, and the remaining 12 went to the US. In 2017 Jaguar announced it would be producing the remaining 9 examples continuing with the already assigned chassis numbers.
