The Mazda RX-7 R1 (93') and Mazda RX-7 R2 (94'-95') are driver focused variants of the RX-7 FD Generation. The R1 and R2 are essentially the same performance oriented package with the only meaningful distinction being their model year. Like the rest of the FD range, the R1 and R2's are powered by Mazda's 1.3L 13B rotary twin-turbo engine capable of 255hp, driving power the rear via a 5-speed manual transmission. However, the R1 and R2 featured a stiffer suspension, strut bar, additional oil cooling, front and rear spoilers, black suede seats, and sun-roof delete, among others. Production numbers are estimated at 2,600 units. It is worth noting that many Base Model and Touring samples from this period have been modified to look similar to a factory R1/R2. The JDM version of the R1/R2 is known as the RX-7 Type R.
