The Mercedes-Benz SLK200 Kompressor was a variant of the R170 SLK-Class that was introduced for the 1997 model year. The SLK 200 Kompressor was only available in a folding-hardtop convertible body style, and was initially powered by Mercedes' M111.943 engine, which was a 2.0L supercharged inline four that had an output of 189hp. For the 2001 model year, the SLK200 Kompressor was introduced to more markets worldwide, and because of this, was fitted with a downtuned engine that would comply with emissions regulations. This new engine was the M111.958, which was a 2.0L supercharged inline four with an output of 161hp. Both engines were available with manual and automatic transmission options that sent drive to the rear wheels. Production of the R170 Mercedes-Benz SLK200 Kompressor ended in 2004, although the model series continued life in the next generation R171 Mercedes-Benz SLK.
