Porsche 718 Boxster & Cayman (2017 to 2025)

With the new 982-generation, the marketing designation of the Boxster and the Cayman were changed to Porsche 718, a nod to Porsche 718 RSK winner of the Targa Florio race in 1959 and 1960. Because the 718 initially lost two cylinders, going from a naturally aspirated flat-6 engine to a turbocharged flat-4 engine, the name is meant to evoke a racing series that was won by a light car that outmaneuvered the cars with more powerful engines. Later versions such as the 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4 would regain the flat-six in the form of a 4.0 liter engine derived from the 992. The main difference between the Cayman and Boxster names is that the Boxster denotes a convertible while the Cayman is a coupe.
