The Carrera RS was introduced in 1973 as a lightened and modified 911 S, built by Porsche to qualify for FIA&rsquo;s Group 4 GT/Special Sports Car racing series category. With this model, the Carrera name would be reborn from the 356 Carrera inspired by the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico in the 1950s. Compared to a standard 911S of the same period, the Carrera RS had a larger 2.7 Liter engine developing 210 hp, mechanical fuel injection, race-ready suspension, a ducktail rear spoiler, larger brakes, along with wider rear wheels and fenders. Two versions were offered: the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/carrera-rs/lightweight/">Lightweight/Sport</a> option M471 was the racing-oriented basis for the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/carrera-rs/rsr/">RSR</a>, while the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/carrera-rs/touring/">Touring option, package M472</a>, retained much of the interior trim and features of the standard car. In 1974 Porsche introduced the Carrera RS 3.0 with mechanical fuel injection producing 230 hp. Its price was almost twice that of the 2.7 RS, but it offered full racing capability. The chassis was largely similar to that of the 1973 Carrera RSR and the braking system was from the 917 racing car. The use of thinner metal plate panels and a minimalist interior enabled its weight to be reduced to around 2,000 lb.
