The Volkswagen Lupo was the subcompact city car entry meant to take the place of the Polo, which had grown in size beyond its roots. The first Lupo was introduced for the 1998 model year with a variety of gasoline and diesel powerplants. In 1999, the Lupo 3L (not reflecting 3 liters of displacement - rather, the economy goal of using less than 3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers) was introduced with a 60hp 1.2-liter turbodiesel. In 2002, the Lupo GTI followed VW’s hot-hatch tradition, offering 125 horsepower. Production of the Lupo ended in 2005.
