About this 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL

VIN: 1980405500612

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing — 1955

An exceptional unrestored Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, retaining its original matching chassis, engine, and body numbers, original DB 158 Weissgrau factory paint, original leather interior, factory underbody protection, and complete factory documentation.

Unlike most Gullwings on the market today, this car has never been restored. Specialists from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Fellbach inspected it in person and issued an official signed and stamped statement confirming: “This 300 SL Gullwing Coupé was never restored, and there were no damages or accidents. A very rare and valuable collectors car with patina.”

The car was built in Sindelfingen in August 1955 and shipped on August 22, 1955, via Bremen to the Mercedes-Benz distributor in Los Angeles. Its original factory delivery card remains with the car and confirms the delivery date, route, factory specification, and component numbers.
The car spent the following decades in California and Texas, with its ownership history recorded in the official Gullwing Registry. It later returned to Europe and was acquired in 2008 from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center for one of the largest private classic car collections in the Middle East, owned by a member of the UAE ruling family. For the past fifteen years, it has been preserved in a closed private gallery.

The originality of this example is what makes it truly exceptional. The car retains its original DB 158 Weissgrau paint, original leather interior, and even its original factory underbody protection — a detail almost always lost during restoration. Its matching chassis, engine, and body numbers are confirmed by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center certificate.

The factory specification is equally notable: special high-gloss paintwork, special upholstery, English-language instruments for the US market, sealed-beam headlights, chrome bumper overriders, and a rare 3.64 rear axle ratio. All of this is recorded on the original 1955 factory delivery card.

The car is accompanied by a complete documentation file, including the original factory delivery card, Gullwing Registry record, Mercedes-Benz Classic Center certificate and statement, service history, and maintenance invoices.

Unrestored 300 SL Gullwings with matching numbers, original finishes, factory documentation, and provenance of this level are exceptionally rare. This is not simply a collectible Gullwing — it is a highly preserved reference example of one of the most important sports cars ever built.
