1958 Porsche 356 Cabriolet Emory Motorsports
VIN 150601
What’s special about this listing
This 1958 Porsche 356A is a Reutter-built cabriolet that was acquired by a prior owner as a rolling project in the early 2000s and sent to Emory Motorsports, where it was modified for vintage racing with a 1,620cc flat-four and a Type 741/2 four-speed manual transaxle as well as a central fuel filler, a louvered engine lid, a roll bar, and four-wheel disc brakes. The car was then driven in CSRG and SOVREN events throughout the Pacific Northwest before being featured on BaT in September 2007. Following a partial repaint, Chassis 150601 appeared on the site again in March 2009, and it spent several years with a collector in Germany until the current owner’s acquisition in 2017. The engine is equipped with dual Solex carburetors and an Ahnendorp exhaust system, and other highlights include a removable hardtop, driving lights, a Sebring-style side mirror, space-saver wheels, houndstooth upholstery, an Abarth steering wheel, and a fire suppression system. This 356A Outlaw is now offered on dealer consignment with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a SOVREN logbook, service records, and a California title.
Work performed during the initial build at Emory Motorsports involved modifying the hood to accommodate a central fuel filler and adding inverted louvers to the engine lid. The body was repainted in red with white roundels, and a roll bar was installed. The removable hardtop and portions of the upper bodywork were refinished in black with orange pinstriping around 2008, and Pegasus graphics were added to the fenders. Paint chips and flaws around the car can be viewed in the image gallery below.
Build highlights include driving lights, headlight guards, windshield retainers, a Sebring-style side mirror, an external cutoff switch, a rear tow hook, and a central exhaust outlet. The 15×5.5” alloy wheels are wrapped in 205/60 Hoosier Speedster tires. The brakes have been converted to four-wheel discs.
The cabin is protected by a roll bar and houses fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in black upholstery with red houndstooth inserts. A fire suppression system, leather window straps, and a Schroth safety net and harnesses have also been added.
A leather-wrapped Abarth steering wheel sits ahead of VDO green-letter instrumentation consisting of a central 8k-rpm tachometer flanked by a 120-mph speedometer and a combination gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 97k miles, which is not considered to be accurate. Total mileage is unknown.
The replacement 1,620cc flat-four is said to have been sourced from a 912 and features dual Solex carburetors, a billet aluminum oil sump, and an Ahnendorp exhaust system. The engine case does not have a number stamping. A Fuel Safe fuel cell is mounted in the front trunk.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Type 741/2 four-speed manual transaxle. The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity lists factory equipment and identification numbers. Photos taken after the initial build are viewable in the gallery and available.
