When Ferrari introduced the 250 GTE in the early 1960s, it marked a notable moment within the model range of the Maranello based marque. For the first time Ferrari presented a car that not only combined speed and engineering with elegant design, but also offered space for four occupants. The 250 GTE 2 plus 2 was introduced in 1960 and represented an important expansion of the well known 250 series, which played a central role in Ferrari history throughout the nineteen fifties and sixties.

The foundation was based on the familiar platform of the 250 models, combined with a longer wheelbase. By positioning the engine slightly further forward within the chassis, space was created for two additional seats in the rear. The bodywork was designed and built by Pininfarina, responsible during this period for many of Ferrari’s most recognizable designs.

Beneath the long hood lies the well known 3.0 liter Colombo V12, designed by Gioacchino Colombo. This lightweight twelve cylinder engine formed the technical backbone of many Ferrari models from this era. In the 250 GTE it produces approximately 240 horsepower and is renowned for its smooth character and distinctive sound. The model designation 250 refers to the displacement per cylinder, a naming tradition Ferrari frequently applied at the time.

The Ferrari we offer here is a 250 GTE Series I from 1962, belonging to the first production series of the model. A total of 299 examples of this initial generation were built before later series followed. This particular example is matching numbers. The car is presented in an elegant Grigio Fumo finish, combined with a black leather interior and striking red carpets. This combination perfectly suits the character of a classic Ferrari grand touring car from the early 1960s.

Mechanically the car has recently received extensive attention. A comprehensive program was carried out by Roelofs Engineering with an investment of approximately 200,000 euros. The engine, drivetrain and various mechanical components were thoroughly addressed. The result is a 250 GTE that is in excellent technical condition, which is clearly evident in this example.

Once behind the wheel you immediately experience what made this Ferrari so appealing in its time. The long hood, the character of the V12 and the comfortable grand touring nature create a driving experience that clearly differs from many sports cars of the same period. It is a Ferrari that feels equally at home on long European journeys as it does on relaxed touring drives.

Within Ferrari history the 250 series played a significant role. Models from this range formed a key part of the brand’s lineup in the nineteen fifties and sixties and laid the foundation for later Ferrari generations such as the 275 and 330.

Today this Ferrari 250 GTE Series I represents a particularly interesting model for enthusiasts of classic Ferraris. The combination of Pininfarina design, the Colombo V12 and the recent high level mechanical investment make this a highly attractive example.
