I Purchased my GTO 30-years ago from the original owner in Castle Rock, Colorado. The owner garaged the car and drove it as a computer ending with 92k on the odometer. The car was all original with no accident history or any motortran rebuilds. Other than the 389ci engine, trans, body, and interior being ‘tired,’ all parts were straight and running well.
The GTO was ‘born’ with Mayfair Maze (yellow) Paint, Black Interior, Four Barrel Carb, and
3-Speed Manual Trans console, Posi Trac. I drove it for 10 years while starting the restoration.
I coordinated a COMPLETE professional frame-on ‘original stock’ restoration with some *standard motortran performance upgrades. Started with removing the body front clip, engine, trans, and rear end. The engine was completely machined and rebuilt to include a .30 bore over and Comp Cam to compliment the slight bore over. Replaced the four-barrel carb with a rebuilt correct numbers matching Rochester carb Tri-Power. Added an electric fuel pump for cold start performance. Replaced the 3-sp trans with a rebuilt correct numbers matching 4-sp Muncie M20 trans and dual disc clutch. Rebuilt the posi trac rear end with 3:55 gears.
Media blasted the engine bay, undercarriage frame, and trunk before priming and correctly repainting all blasted surfaces. Replaced motor mounts, bushings, ground wires, rubber seals, grommets, and weatherstripping.
Complete paint color change to a correct 1965 Pontiac metallic Teal Turquoise. Complete new stock black interior from Legendary Interiors. The rally gauge instrument dash panel and console vacuum gauge were correctly restored. Complete new stock shaded glass. New correct rear power antenna. Restored rear taillight bezel and front grill panels. Rechromed front and rear bumpers. New gas tank, fuel lines, and brake lines. Complete new suspension to include rear air bag assist.
Since completed restoration in 2010, odometer now reads 3,718. Out of the many first place awards won since, my favorite is the 2012 GTOAA Nationals First Place Voters Choice trophy signed by The Godfather of GTO-Jim Wangers!
