What are the most common problems with the 1965 Sunbeam Tiger’s engine?

The 1965 Sunbeam Tiger’s 260 V8 engine has several well-documented issues that owners should watch for:

Cooling Problems - This is the #1 issue. The Tiger’s small engine bay and compact radiator struggle to handle the Ford V8’s heat output. Many owners experience overheating, especially in traffic or warm weather. The original cooling system was marginal for the V8 power.

Fuel Delivery Issues - The mechanical fuel pump location and routing can cause vapor lock on hot days. Many owners upgrade to electric fuel pumps to solve this.

Carburetor Troubles - The original Autolite 4100 carburetors are now 60+ years old and often need rebuilding. Lean running conditions are common as wear develops.

Oil Leaks - Like most vintage V8s, the 260 develops leaks from valve cover gaskets, timing cover, and rear main seal as it ages.

Chassis Stress - While not strictly an engine problem, the V8’s torque can stress the Tiger’s unit-body structure, leading to cracks around the bulkhead and suspension mounting points.

Electrical Issues - The original generator and points ignition system are prone to failure. Many owners upgrade to alternators and electronic ignition.

The good news is that most of these issues have well-established fixes in the Tiger community, and parts availability is excellent since the engine is essentially a small-block Ford.
