What are the most common issues with the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T engine?

Based on my research, here are the most common engine issues with the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T:

Engine-Specific Problems:

426 Hemi:

  • Idle quality issues and carburetor problems (most common complaint)
  • Difficulty starting, especially when cold
  • Dieseling/run-on after shut-off due to lack of proper carburetor solenoid
  • Valvetrain issues with the unique hemispherical combustion chamber design

440 Big Block (4-barrel and Six Pack):

  • Overheating issues, especially at idle and in traffic
  • Oil pressure problems (low pressure at idle, sometimes dropping to 8-12 PSI)
  • Timing chain wear (original chains had plastic components that degrade)
  • Oil starvation issues under hard cornering

383 (Standard R/T Engine):

  • Low oil pressure when warm (drops significantly from cold start)
  • Overheating problems similar to the 440
  • Carburetor issues and fuel delivery problems

Common Issues Across All Engines:

  • Cooling system inadequacy for traffic/idle conditions
  • Timing chain stretch and wear (especially with age)
  • Oil pump and lubrication issues
  • Carburetor tuning difficulties
  • Fuel system vapor lock in hot weather

The good news is that most of these issues have well-established solutions in the Mopar community, and many stem from the era’s technology rather than fundamental design flaws. Since this particular car is modified, some of these issues may have already been addressed with modern upgrades.

Would you like me to help you find similar Challengers, or do you have questions about any specific engine issue?
