The Yamaha XS650 was introduced in the late 1960s as a response to the growing popularity of mid-sized twin-cylinder motorcycles. With its classic lines and parallel-twin configuration, the model evoked British machines such as the Triumph Bonneville, yet from a technical standpoint it was more modern in its design.

The 650cc engine featured a unit-construction layout and a single overhead camshaft, contributing to both reliability and ease of maintenance. This made the XS650 appealing not only to enthusiasts, but also well-suited for everyday use.
