If you’re seeking a classic BMW that strikes a rare balance between heritage, drivability, and modern performance sensibilities, this 1982 BMW 528e delivers across the board. With just over 94,000 original miles, this example represents a high-integrity, no-shortcuts E28 build that has been comprehensively refreshed from the ground up.
This is not a project. This is a curated, enthusiast-executed build designed to be driven, enjoyed, and appreciated.

Exterior:

Finished in Baltic Blue, this 528e presents with a confident yet understated road presence. The build intentionally began with a slick-top (non-sunroof) 1982 528e chassis, a highly desirable configuration.
During the restoration, minor damage to the driver’s rear quarter was properly repaired. The vehicle was then placed on a rotisserie, allowing every inch of the chassis and body to be addressed correctly. More recently, the trunk lid and fuel door were resprayed due to a scratch on the trunk lid and the replacement of the fuel door.
During the paint process, the car was upgraded with OEM BMW Euro front and rear bumpers, grilles, headlights, taillights, and headlight wiper mechanisms. (Note: headlight wiper arms and the correct reservoir are not currently installed.) All glass is in good condition and remains period-correct with factory markings. The exterior is completed with 17-inch forged ACT wheels (three center caps included), giving the car an OEM plus aesthetic with subtle motorsport influence.

Interior:

The interior is a standout feature and a genuine time capsule, blending originality with rare new old stock components. Finished in OEM BMW black leather, the cabin reflects the high standards of this build. The rare manual sport front seats and rear seats were professionally recovered by Gary Macher of Newtown, Pennsylvania, a highly respected craftsman whose work appeared at Pebble Beach and other concours-level events. The car is also equipped with a refinished period-correct MOMO wheel with a rare Hartge center.

Additional highlights include:
• New old stock dashboard
• New old stock Euro headlight switch
• Additional NOS trim and switches where appropriate

The original carpets remain in excellent condition for their age. Heating and air conditioning are fully functional, making the car enjoyable in real-world driving conditions. Overall, the interior delivers a refined blend of authenticity, craftsmanship, and usability that gives this E28 real character.

Engine & Drivetrain:

At the core of this build is a Metric Mechanic 4.0-liter in-line six that started life as an M30 engine, a truly special powerplant that defines the car’s personality. This engine was sourced new in a crate from a fellow enthusiast and paired with Extrudabody individual throttle bodies (ITBs). Engine management is handled by a Megasquirt ECU, with a base tune completed by Kassel Performance. The car will benefit from final tuning to fully unlock the engine’s potential. To help keep this special engine cool a customer oil cooler was fabricated. This 528e also sports a custom exhaust that gives the car the appropriate soundtrack for those Sunday morning drives. Power is delivered through a new old stock Euro dogleg 5-speed transmission, providing a true touring car driving experience. The result is a torque-rich, motorsport-inspired drivetrain that remains entirely streetable and engaging.

Suspension & Chassis:

The suspension has been comprehensively refreshed with performance and longevity in mind:

• Bilstein performance shocks
• H&R springs and sway bars
• E34 M5 front & rear brakes
• All bushings, ball joints, and sway bar end links, and wear components replaced

The factory control arms were powder-coated, and the undercarriage presents cleanly and cohesively.

Wheel and tire setup:

• Forged ACT Wheel

o 17x8.5 (front)
o 17x9.5 (rear)

• Continental Extreme Contact DWS

o Front: 235/45/17
o Rear: 255/45/17

This setup delivers a planted, confidence-inspiring ride without compromising comfort or road manners.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a properly built, thoughtfully upgraded E28 that retains BMW’s original spirit while elevating the driving experience. The car must be seen in person to be fully appreciated and will reward its next owner with every mile. Asking $40,000 or best offer.
