What’s the history behind the El Camino Choo Choo SS package and how many were produced in 1987?
The El Camino Choo Choo SS package has a fascinating history! Back in 1983, Chevrolet wanted to give the El Camino a sportier identity since their factory SS model looked nearly identical to base models. They partnered with Choo Choo Customs of Chattanooga, Tennessee, to create a special appearance package.
Choo Choo Customs transformed regular El Caminos by adding a Monte Carlo-inspired polyurethane nose, rally wheels, sport mirrors, bold SS graphics, and custom badging. Unlike traditional Super Sport models, this was purely an appearance package with no performance enhancements - but it gave the El Camino the aggressive look it deserved.
For the 1987 model year, which was the final year of El Camino production, only 861 Choo Choo SS units were produced. In total, about 4,950 Choo Choo Customs El Caminos were built across all five model years (1983-1987). These rare trucks were sold through Chevrolet dealerships with factory-backed warranties, making them the last hurrah for America’s sporty coupe utility vehicles.
Pretty cool that you’re looking at one of these rare 861 examples from 1987! Is there anything specific about this particular car that interests you?
