Lot N1353: 1988 Chevrolet Corvette

The ‘88 Corvette came with two very different transmissions, and each has its own “personality quirks.”

If it’s an automatic (700-R4):

• Torque-converter lock-up likes to fail—feels like driving over rumble strips at 45-50 mph
• Runs hot in traffic; a good cooler is cheap insurance
• Governor can wear and give you lazy 1-2 shifts
• Forward piston cracks, then it slips in 2nd/3rd

If it’s the Doug Nash 4+3 manual:

• The little overdrive unit behind the main box leaks; once ATF and gear oil mix, the overdrive dies
• Solenoid/relay for the overdrive is getting old and can quit
• Clutch fork gets tired after 30-plus years
