“What are the most common problems with the 1992 Jeep Comanche Pioneer XJ transmission?”

The 1992 Jeep Comanche Pioneer XJ 4.0 4×4 uses the Aisin-Warner AX-15 five-speed manual, a stout box overall, but owners flag four repeat issues:

  1. 5th-gear nut backing off – the retaining nut loosens, letting 5th gear slide aft; you’ll hear growling above 55 mph and eventually lose 5th. Re-torque (or upgraded nut) fixes it.
  2. Synchro wear on 2nd/3rd – crunch going into gear, esp. when cold. Fresh 75W-90 GL-3 fluid every 30 k mi and not resting your hand on the shifter helps.
  3. Clutch-release bearing & fork – squeal on pedal depression, then hard shifting. Budget for a new bearing/sleeve when you do the clutch.
  4. Oil starvation off-road – steep climbs can starve the rear bearing; a ½-qt over-fill or deep-skid pan cures it.

At 78 k miles this truck’s AX-15 is still young; check the 5th-gear nut and change the gear oil and you should enjoy many trouble-free miles. Want help finding similar Comanches or need parts sources? Just let me know!
