BACKGROUND
After a year-long hiatus, the Corvette made its return in 1984 with the launch of the C4 model. Over the years, this generation saw steady performance improvements. In 1987, buyers could opt for the Callaway Twin Turbo package, and by 1990, high-performance variants like the ZR1—featuring a Lotus-tuned DOHC engine—revived the excitement that had once made Corvettes iconic.

These performance gains even extended to the standard models. In 1992, the introduction of the LT1 engine brought a robust 296 horsepower to the base Corvette, signaling a proud comeback for power under the hood.

By 1996, the pinnacle of the C4 era arrived amid growing anticipation for the upcoming C5. This final special edition was dubbed the Corvette Grand Sport, borrowing its name from the legendary factory race car. Identified by option code Z16, the Grand Sport stood out with its distinctive metallic blue paint and racing stripes.

At its core was the LT4 5.7L OHV V8—an enhanced version of the LT1. Thanks to a raised rev limit by around 600 rpm and upgraded components such as high-compression cylinder heads, a performance camshaft, roller rockers, and a fully balanced crankshaft, the LT4 pushed out 330 horsepower. The engine’s sharper, more high-strung character set it apart from the LT1.

Visually aggressive and mechanically refined, the Grand Sport was built in limited numbers: just 1,000 units, with 810 coupes and 190 convertibles—all equipped exclusively with manual transmissions, as no automatic version was offered. Interestingly, every manual-transmission Corvette that year—not just the GS—came with the LT4 engine.
