“What are the most common problems with the 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sahara’s transmission?”

The 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sahara’s 5-speed manual (AX-15 or NV3550 depending on build date) is generally sturdy, but owners most often run into:

  1. Clutch-hydraulic headaches – the slave cylinder/throw-out bearing is inside the bell-housing, so when it leaks you have to pull the transmission; many replace the whole clutch assembly at the same time.
  2. 5th-gear nut backing off (AX-15) – the nut can loosen and the gear walks, causing a grind or pop-out at highway speed; a staked-nut upgrade keeps it in place.
  3. Synchronizer wear (both boxes) – 2-3 shifts get notchy, especially when cold; fresh ATF+4 fluid helps, but real fixes require trans removal.
  4. NV355o parts scarcity – New Venture is gone, so rebuilt units sometimes use questionable aftermarket forks and bearings; source from reputable rebuilders.
  5. Wrong-fluid damage – 75W-90 gear oil is too thick; stick with ATF+4 or Chrysler MTF to keep the synchros alive.

Rusty clutch lines can mimic trans issues, so check that first. Otherwise, keep the fluid clean and the hydraulics fresh and these gearboxes live a long life.
