what are the common problems with this car?

The E39 5 Series (1995–2003) is widely regarded as one of BMW’s best-driving sedans, but like any older BMW, it has some well-known trouble spots to watch for:

Cooling System – This is the #1 concern. The original cooling components (radiator, water pump, expansion tank, hoses) are known to fail around 60k–80k miles, and a failure can mean an overheated engine. Many owners do a complete cooling system overhaul as preventative maintenance.

Suspension & Thrust Arm Bushings – These rubber bushings wear out by 75k miles (sometimes as early as 40k), causing loose steering and vibration under braking.

Window Regulators – Front and rear window regulators are a common failure point on higher-mileage E39s.

Oil Leaks – The valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, and power steering hoses are prone to leaking.

Pixel Death on Instrument Cluster – The LCD display in the gauge cluster loses pixels over time, making it hard to read mileage and other info.

The “Twisted Seat” Issue – Some E39s suffer from seat frames that twist or break, particularly on the driver’s side.

ABS Module – The ABS control module can fail; some rebuilds are available in the $400–500 range rather than full replacement.

Windshield Washer System – Particularly on 520i/525i models, the washer fluid delivery can become problematic.

The good news is that the M54 inline-6 in your 525i is a robust engine when properly maintained. Most of these issues are well-documented in the enthusiast community, and many DIYers tackle them to keep costs down.

Given that your car has ~98k miles, I’d especially focus on the cooling system and thrust arm bushings if they haven’t been addressed yet.

Is there anything specific you’d like me to dig into—like valuations for this car or similar manual transmission E39s currently available?
