what are the most common problems with this car?

Based on my research and owner reports, here are the most common problems with the 2005 Jaguar XJ8 (X350 generation):

1. Air Suspension System The air suspension is perhaps the biggest weakness. The compressor can fail, air bags (springs) can leak, and the ECATS (Electronic Control Air and Temperature System) can throw faults. The air suspension compressor relay is a known culprit, and when it fails, the suspension lowers unevenly. This is a frequent issue buyers ask about.

2. Timing Chain Tensioners On the 4.2L V8, the timing chain tensioners can fail due to plastic components wearing down. If this happens, it can cause significant engine damage. A telltale sign is a rattling noise on cold startup.

3. Brake System Especially on Brembo-equipped models, front calipers can stick slightly, causing brake fade and warped discs. This causes a wobbling steering wheel under braking.

4. Electrical Gremlins The X350 is prone to electrical issues—everything from battery drain to sensor failures, I2C bus communication errors, and various module problems.

5. Transmission The ZF 6-speed automatic can have issues with the mechatronic unit or valve body, causing harsh shifting or limp-home mode.

Noted Good News: This particular car has only 111k miles and appears well-maintained. The air suspension works when you buy these cars, but factor in potential future repairs. Many owners retrofit to coil springs if they tire of air suspension maintenance.
