The first model of the Alfa Romeo 8C  was the 1931 8C 2300, which made reference to the car's 2.3L (or 2300 cc) engine. Even though it was initially developed as a racing car, Alfa produced 188 units for road use. The racing variant of the 2300 won the 1931 and 1932 Targa Florio as well as the 1931 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, a victory that made Alfa Romeo add the "Monza" name to the twin-seat GP racer. Also developed in 1931 was the 8C 2300 tipo Le Mans, which was another sports version developed to race in the Eireann Cup and the 24 hours of Le Mans, which it won in 1931, 1932, 1933, and 1934. In 1933, the 8-cylinder engine was enlarged and the 8C 2600 was made as the successor of the highly successful 2300 variant.
