A wide range of variants of the AMC Hornet were built over the course of the production. These standard variants included the Base Model, SST, X, and D/L. These cars differed largely on equipment, altough a few had a better standard engine. Some of these variants also included mild cosmetic changes, such as badging or wheels. Engines available for standard Hornets ranged from a 199ci inline six to a 304ci V8, with all engines available with manual or automatic transmissions. One of the most notable standard variants built for the Hornet was the 1972-1973 Gucci Sportabout, which was a four door wagon styled by Gucci, and featuring unique paint colors, badging, and interior equipment. Production of the AMC Hornet ended in 1977.
