The Series 4 Aston Martin V8 was introduced in 1978. The Series 4 is also commonly known as the Oscar India, with the O and I standing for October Introduction using the NATO alphabet. These cars were the third evolution of the Aston Martin V8 (as the first evolution is part of the DBS V8). Cosmetically, the Oscar India featured various updates from the previous Series 3, with most outstanding changes being the closing of the hood scoop as well as the introduction of an integrated rear spoiler. While still featuring the 5.3L V8 engine as its powerplant, the Oscar India saw the engine fitted with four Weber carburetors. While this engine was capable of generating large amounts of power, United States cars were seriously hampered by de-smogging regulations. Most Series 4 cars were equipped with a 3 speed Chrysler automatic transmission, there were manual cars produced as well. In another first for the Oscar India, a 'Volante' convertible was introduced in 1978 alongside the well-established coupe. Due to chassis reinforcements required for the Volante, drop top cars were 155 pounds heavier than the coupes. Alongside standard cars, the more powerful and sportier Vantage continued to be offered. Production of the Series 4 (Oscar India) Aston Martin V8 ended in 1986, when it was replaced by the Series 5 V8.
