Alpina was still in its nascent years when it began to modify BMW 02 Series cars in 1968. Some notable versions were the Alpina A2 and the Alpina A4. These were high-performance versions of the BMW 2002 tii with rear-wheel drive and a 4 or 5-speed manual transmission. The A2 used the 2.0L M10 inline four engine with Kugelfischer injection, modified to produce up to 180hp. The Alpina A4 was a more radical evolution developing up to 220hp thanks to internal improvements such as forged pistons, special camshafts and fuel injection settings. Finally, the Alpina A4S, was introduced as the pinnacle of performance for that series: a semi-official “Sport” variant focused on competition with more than 230hp. The BMW 02 Series Alpina was produced until 1975.
