The Chevrolet Camaro was radically re-designed for the 1970 model year, and it is thought it took longer to engineer the bodies for mass production. Due to this, the 2nd Gen Camaro was delayed and was only released in January of 1970. The SS performance variant picked up largely where the 1st Gen Camaro SS left off, offering the small block L48 350, and the L34 or L78 SS-396 which was bored to 402 cubic inches now. The big block SS cars received blacked out tail panels and the L78 equipped SS required a posi-traction rear end. Just as they did in the 1st Gen SS, all SS cars were still available with either a 4 speed, or 3 speed automatic transmission. 1972 was the last year a big block could be ordered in a 2nd Gen Camaro, by 1973 the SS was discontinued and replaced by the less flashy LT. The SS wouldn’t return until the 4th Generation Chevrolet Camaro.
