Chevrolet COPO Chevelle - 2nd Gen (1969 to 1969)

The Central Office Production Order also known as COPO, was an avenue for Chevrolet dealers to spec out Corvette high performance engines in other models, one such model was the COPO Chevelle. In previous years the COPO program as it became known was initially used by dealers for fleet sales and special-order paint colors, but Chevy Dealers noticed Fred Gibb at Gibb Chevrolet was able to use this system to order special equipped Novas and Camaros with high performance engines. This system allowed dealers to go outside the Regular Production Option (RPO) order sheet for a Chevelle and equip it with the L72 427ci big block creating 450hp. It was also possible to have more than 1 special order item such as 15” rally wheels and can be known as a double COPO. The COPO program created some of Chevrolet’s best sleeper street performance cars, that had all the performance but no outward clues as to the monster horsepower under the hood.
